Both major parties pledge stormwater reuse

Updated July 30, 2010 14:03:00

The Federal Opposition will commit $16 million to a stormwater recycling plan for Adelaide's eastern suburbs.

It has promised to make stormwater safe for drinking.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is in Adelaide, campaigning in the marginal seat of Sturt.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard earlier committed $10 million to a stormwater reuse plan for the same area.

South Australian Liberal Senator Simon Birmingham says the Coalition's plan does not rely on State Government funding.

"Unlike Labor's plans where all we seem to get is extra water for parks and gardens, we want to use existing infrastructure, existing pipes and make sure that stormwater is used in a manner that allows us to reduce our draw from the River Murray eventually over time," he said.

Federal Water Minister Penny Wong says the Opposition is playing catch-ups after Labor announced its plan.

"It's taken Mr Abbott 12 years in government, two years in opposition to finally discover stormwater 22 days out from a federal election and I think people have to look at his plan with that in mind," she said.

Meals on Wheels

Mr Abbott visited a Meals on Wheels centre at Norwood in Adelaide's east, where he met volunteers and helped out in the kitchen by stirring food, peeling carrots and grating lemons.

"This isn't a Kevin O'Lemon is it?" he joked.

Mr Abbott said a Coalition government would declare 2012 the year of Meals on Wheels and promised $2 million for the community organisation.

The Opposition Leader also visited St Joseph's school at Hectorville.
