Clerk stole $4m from law firm, court told

Posted July 28, 2010 13:25:00

A former clerk has admitted stealing more than $4 million from the trust account of a now-defunct law firm.

William Brenton Willoughby, 64, pleaded guilty in the Adelaide District Court to 49 counts of falsifying documents, 17 of theft and one of dishonest dealings with documents.

It was alleged he siphoned the money from Magarey Farlam's trust account between 1998 and 2005 while working for the company.

The court heard Willoughby was suffering from incurable leukaemia and had advanced diabetes.

His lawyer said this may be a factor for the court in sentencing and asked for an adjournment until after a medical appointment in September.

The judge listed a hearing for October for submissions on penalty.
