Police chief casts doubt over fly-in, fly-out policing

Western Australia's Police Commissioner says the idea of fly-in, fly-out officers for regional stations would not work.

The police union yesterday said the idea should be investigated because many regional-based officers were unwilling to move their families from Perth.

However, Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan says he would not support using fly-in, fly-out police to alleviate regional police shortages.

He says it may work for the mining industry, but the hands-on nature of policing is very different.

"I'm not in agreement with fly-in, fly-out as a policy. One of the things I've made clear is that police officers to do their job have to build good, solid, strong relationships with the community," he said.
