Cruelty towards kangaroos 'beggars belief'

Peel police are looking for the driver of a four-wheel drive vehicle responsible for killing two kangaroos and seriously injuring a third at Preston Beach on Saturday night.

Police say it is the fourth recent instance of cruelty to kangaroos in the area.

Peel Superintendent David Parkinson says the third kangaroo had to be put down.

Superintendent Parkinson says they suspect someone removed the kangaroo's jaw since it suffered no injuries relating to being run over.

"The agony that animal must have gone through was absolutely horrendous," he said.

"I've been a police officer for a very, very long time, 32 years, I've seen a lot of carnage and everything like that, but when you see a creature like that it just beggars belief.

"These people are just despicable.

"They're not animals because animals don't do things like that."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or their local police.
